Abstract
The verbalisation of emotions in idioms often involves the description of physiological reactions or non-verbal behaviour that is culturally determined. Drawing on theories of embodiment and cognitive linguistics, this paper examines the conceptualisation of anger (Ärger) in German idioms in order to identify conceptual metonyms and metaphors, as well as semantic affinities and convergences between phrasemes that, on a literal level of meaning, evoke different images in the representation of this emotional state. The analysis is carried out from a semantic-cognitive point of view on the basis of an inventory of idioms taken from various phraseological dictionaries, while their uses and functions in context are illustrated by explanatory examples extrapolated from the German Web 2020 corpus.File | Size | Format | |
