Abstract

Pozzolanic cements have been used for millennia as building materials, but they can also satisfy modern requirements, namely low energy consumption in production and durability. This article describes work which studied, by chemical, physical, petrographical and technological means, the pozzolanic characteristics of four Oligocene-Miocene calcalkaline pyroclastic rocks from Sardinia. Compared with another well-known Italian pozzolan ("Segni"), the results show some of the investigated materials to have satisfactory pozzolanic characteristics for use in the cement industry.
