Abstract

This article explores how the concept of time evolved from the pre-Islamic era to the beginning of Islam, and how the cyclical conception was transformed into a linear one. The analysis is carried out by studying the semantics of the Arabic terms /dahr/ and /sāʿa/, starting from their reflexes in various Semitic languages and cultures of the ancient Near East, and observing their evolution in Arabic poetic texts from the Jāhiliyya to the Umayyad period as well as in major lexicographical works.
