Abstract

This book recollects 31 philosophical essays on norms, by 25 authors, that appeared between 1895 and 2011. These essays investigate (starting from different contexts and through different styles of philosophical research) a series of fundamental theoretical and philosophical questions concerning norms (from the question on the ontological status of norms to the question of the validity and operancy of norms, from the question on constitutivity of norms to the question on realities constituted by norms), and propose a plurality of theses and conceptual paradigms that contribute to enlighten such phenomena that, while being part of our everyday experience, still leave many open questions to philosophical reflection. The book is divided in five main sections: I. Ontology of norms, II. Typology of norms: the phenomenon of constitutive rules, III. Realities constitute by rules, IV. Validity of norms, V. Sociological philosophies of norms.
