La globalizzazione mediterranea: l’influenza pisano-genovese e catalana

Sergio Tognetti
2023-01-01

Abstract

The essay provides a quick overview of the merchant networks that, beginning in the 11th century, inserted Sardinia into the Mediterranean furrowed by Pisan and Genoese (and eventually Catalan) ships. Already a Byzantine province and now politically independent but also divided into the four 'Giudicati,' the island thus became from the extreme western periphery of the Christian East to a key junction of connections between the great cities of the Catholic Mediterranean and Islamic emporia.
