Abstract

The pandemic is the expression of a more general crisis in the relationship with nature and in the social use of technology, with important connections in all fields, and which requires real changes in technical-scientific paradigms. The building heritage is involved in this crisis, but it can also contribute to find new ways. The global health crisis has re-evaluated places and spaces, bringing interest back for “low-density” settlements, “villages” and rural landscapes. Despite being recognized as marginal, now their very periphery can turn into a competitive advantage. The places and their buildings are mostly within the “circular” building paradigm, made of “proximity” and “natural” materials. The “techno-diversity” of their construction is full of material and immaterial values, important from the point of view of culture, ecology, healthiness. The tools for interventions that use advanced diagnostic technologies for knowledge projects that guarantee the quality and compatibility of the recovery and reuse of heritage. Finally, associating the materiality of historical artifacts with the “immaterial” dimensions of advanced technologies, of digitization, has ensured in this emergency phase the double advantage of the healthiness of the living space and of the connection in global communication networks, which break the isolation pandemic. In conclusion, a case study exemplifies these theses.
