Il modernismo nel tardo Impero ottomano

Abstract

The modernist movement cannot be reduced to a compact and homogeneous doctrinal bloc, presenting itself instead as a state of mind marked by common aspirations that display different values in different environmental and social contexts, within the same religious denomination, and even within the same region. This article identifies and analyses the influences that animated modernism in the Ottoman Empire: Western thought, the French Enlightenment, European nationalism and the Protestant Reformation. However, despite all these influences, the Ottoman modernist movement had some unique characteristics, including the importance of religion in the Ottoman national identity, combining elements of traditional Ottoman culture with modern European ideas and practices, which certainly impacted many areas of the Empire.
