Abstract

Recently, Article 119 of the Constitution has been amended introducing the principle of insularity, which contains two provisions: “Republic recognises the peculiarities of islands and adopts measures to remove the advantages of island status”. Islands have also been qualified as outermost areas, fully covered by the national strategy for inland areas (SNAI), i.e. by Italian and European cohesion policy. Therefore, it is necessary that in the framework of the new Article 119, paragraph 6 of the Constitution and in that of Article 174 TFEU, effective and coordinated policies promote the socioeconomic development of the islands.
