Abstract

Colonial Memory and European Memory. Slavery, Expansionism, and Imperialism in the House of European History’s narrative The essay is aimed at analysing the way colonialism has been included in the historical narrative developed by the EU, focusing on the case of the House of European History (HEH). After retracing the debates about colonialism’s role in both EU memorial policies and the HEH set-up over time, it focuses on the narrative developed by the interactive audio guide HEH proposes to the museum visitors and the online public. The analysis reveals that the EU is seeking to achieve a problematic synthesis that does not question the underlying positivity of European values but considers the impact of colonialism on today’s society
