Abstract

In recent years, scholars and practitioners have shown a growing interest in studying the determinants of tourism expenditure. The principal purpose is to profile the origin markets of tourism flows and highlight which specific characteristics at the destination can guide tourists’ choices. The present study contributes to the scientific debate by proposing the analysis of original data obtained through a questionnaire distributed in five tourist destinations in southern Sardinia with a prevailing sun-and-sand tourism vocation: Cagliari, Domus de Maria, Muravera, Pula, and Villasimius. The analysis considers the entire sample and sub-samples based on nationality, gender, and age. The aggregate results show how accessibility, entertainment and recreation activities, and the landscape positively affect tourist expenditure. At a disaggregated level, accessibility appears more relevant for women, entertainment activities for men and young people, and the landscape for foreigners and women
