Abstract

This thesis aims to highlight the role of metaphor as a cognitive tool that expresses imagistic potential (Aristotle, Rhetoric). The process of constructing metaphorical meaning derives from a previous experience of vision, i.e. from the possibility of ‘seeing’ and interpreting a figure now as one thing, now as the other (Wittgenstein 1953). The subject of the research is the metaphor that is expressed in the image of the artistic background as the outcome of a process of creation of the work of art in which the domains involved, not leading to an unambiguous interpretation, often direct the interpreter towards unimaginable visual spectacles. Aesthetically relevant differences often present in the artistic image can activate imagined visual contents in the viewer (Nanay 2016) defining those properties of metaphor to be further extended in the field of storytelling. The characteristics that identify the artistic metaphor are tested in a corpus of artworks that encompasses, despite the variety of techniques expressed, the most significant signs of Sardinian art. The versatility of the metaphorical language expressed by the artistic language in Sardinia and its ability to reformulate the imagination makes it assimilable to the world of narratives, to the media and transmedia environments that inhabit the contemporary world.
