Abstract

Apuleius Mutinensis: about an unpublished manuscript of the Estense Library · This article brings to light and analyses a manuscript of Apuleius’ rhetorical works, so far escaped to the attention of scholars: the ms alfa.Q.5.27 (= Lat. 214), kept at the Biblioteca Estense Universitaria in Modena, which I have designated by the siglum M. On the basis of an accurate collation with F, φ and mss belonging to the 4 classes of recentiores, we can conclude that M is very close to the mss of the class Ib (especially U), but it does not depend directly on any of them; therefore, it is an important and reliable witness, as well as U, E or A, and, moreover, it is often more correct of them. So, this study makes the most of a manuscript, unknown before, which, even if does not subvert the stemma of Apuleius’ rhetorica, offers a not negligible contribution and deserves to be included among the best witnesses.
