Abstract

The paper presents an interdisciplinary study concerning the stratified fortified landscape of Carloforte, a city located in the S. Pietro Island (Sardinia), founded by the Savoy authority in the eighteenth century. This is a geologically volcanic palimpsest, where its architectures are intimately connected with unique colours, morphologies, and materials continuously changing but still not adequately known and valued. Starting from the understanding of the territory and its defensive heritage, thanks to documentary and iconographic analyses, the memories of travellers, the reconstruction of the constructive history, the techniques and the materials, as well as the assessment of protection policies and restoration interventions, it has been possible to reconstruct the transformations that, since the beginning of the twentieth century, have deeply altered, and sometimes compromised, this system through selective demolition, restoration activities and reuses. Finally, the examination of the institutional actions that during time have attributed different meanings to such architectures, shows as it is possible to draw opportunities from these assets by means of strategies of resignification, reuse and reintegration based on the concrete understanding of the values of this natural and built landscape.
