Abstract
One of the major post-war events in contemporary art music, the world premiere of "Der Tanz um das goldene Kalb" from Arnold Schönberg’s unfinished opera "Moses und Aron" took place in Darmstadt on July 2, 1951, during the Internationale Ferienkurse für Neue Musik. The article reconstructs the planning of this premiere through the correspondence of the composer and the organisers (notably the conductor Hermann Scherchen and the director of the Darmstadt Summer Courses, Wolfgang Steinecke), and re-discusses its historical significance, confronting the performance and its reception with Schönberg’s poetics and aesthetic goals.File | Size | Format | |
