Abstract

Thee Carretera Real from Madrid to Valencia was planned in the second half of the 18th century as one of the main roads of the Iberian peninsula, later built in the 19th century. Along the way, road construction became an opportunity for urban and territorial reorganisation. !anks also to this the Atocha district of Madrid, where the road to Valencia began, played a key role in urban dynamics, and in the mid-19th century the railway station and other urban facilities were built there
