Abstract

Small historic centres are among the most important signs of our cultura/ heritage: the homogeneity of their urban composition represents an authentic environmental monuments, deserving of protection. The survey and recording of these complex systems, preparatory to actions to safeguard and recovery, oflen encounters difficulties concerning access of Jocations and invasiveness of the investigations. This paper presents the possibility of using advanced digitai mechatronic instruments in survey operations, such as a hybrid rover equipped with instruments (e.g. thermo-camera) to obtain three-dimensional images of objects in places inaccessible operators, and textural data on the materials constituting the various objects. Tested at a historic building site in Va/comino (Lazio), the automated remote system yields raster thermal images combined with 30 vector modelling, and provides information about the materiai characteristics of the object being analyzed and its dimensionai aspects.
