Abstract

The article aims to explain important aspects of the letters between Martin Heidegger and Karl Lowith (Briefwechsel 1919¬ 1973, Freiburg, Alber 2017). Many of the issues discussed in this correspondence directly concern the dilemmas and lacerations of the German culture of the time. Both Heidegger and Lowith, recognising the profound decay of academic philosophy, stressed the need to intensify the confrontation with what had emerged in literature and painting (Dostoevsky, van Gogh, Franz Marc) as well as within disciplines such as classical philology (Jaeger) and theology (Barth), which were increasingly inclined to deal with themes and problems discussed by philosophers.
