Abstract

Siete miradas en un mismo paisaje by Esther Tusquets is a complicated text, which hides multiple meanings behind the apparent simplicity of seven short stories: from the social one, recognizable in the opposition between the high privileged middle class and the hungry mass, to the ideological and cultural ones, identifiable in the protagonist herself, struggling between her own world, a golden microcosm perceived as strange, and the world of the poor people, to which she tends being it more true. Sarah, then, moves between these opposite extremes, searching for a kingdom that might give a sense to her name (as a matter of fact, in Jewish Sarah means "princess") and to her existence. Rather than with just seven stories, the text thus deals with the development of a personality taking place through seven steps, under the sign of transgression and subjectivity. Transgression acts at an ideological, social and sexual level through the breaking of the rules underlying Sarah’s world. On the other hand, subjectivity is evident in a process of demistification against the codes and characters of that privileged microcosm, which loses every meaning in front of Sarah’s merciless ‘siete miradas’.
