Abstract

When the Chinese women’s volleyball team won the 2019 World cup, two days before the celebration of the 70th anniversary of the People’s Republic of China, the expression ‘spirit of the women’s volleyball’ occupied the national public discourse, linking the success of the players to the glory of the nation. This contribution explores the history of the concept and its relevance in the news media and cultural realms, with the aim to develop a case study on the political use of sport in China.
