Quando la mappa incontra la fiction

Abstract

Representation or description of a map, which illustrates the main settings of the plot, are not uncommon to find in films and novels. These cartographic means are heterogeneous because may assume various forms, are produced by varied techniques, are the result of different levels of accuracy, and may have different types of reference (for instance, they could show a real or imaginary place). There are explicit and implicit maps: the former are explicitly described in the work, the latter are not. There are inner or external maps: the former do not overlap the geography of the real world, the latter do.

Non è raro imbattersi, durante la proiezione di un film o la lettura di un romanzo, nella presentazione o nella descrizione testuale di una mappa che illustra le principali ambientazioni in cui si svolgono le vicende. Questi strumenti hanno una natura spesso molto eterogenea poiché variano nella forma, nelle tecniche adoperate, nell'accuratezza e – dal momento che alcuni di essi ci mostrano territori reali, altri, invece, luoghi immaginari – anche nel tipo di referenzialità. Così, a seconda che l’opera di finzione sia dotata o meno di un apparato cartografico, parleremo di mappe esplicite e mappe implicite e, qualora invece la geografia del mondo finzionale sia autonoma o sovrapponibile a quella del mondo reale, di mappe interne e mappe esterne.
