Abstract

The house is that nest so central in nineteenth-century children's literature, a place of salvation and protection. Even today the house is often perceived as the safe place to protect the individual from the dangers of the world by "educating him/her to face them". In the fairytale, however, the house is not always a safe and protective place: just think of Hansel and Gretel's sugarbread house or Baba Yaga's house on crow's feet or all the houses inhabited by orcs and witches, but also those that have become inhospitable for the hero or heroine of the story and must be abandoned in order to grow up. The paper is proposed as an interpretative path within the "fairy tale house" with particular attention to some representations in contemporary illustrated books.
