Abstract

This paper analyzes the friendly relationship between an Italian noble, Marco Antonio Colonna, and the princes of Eboli, Ruy Gómez de Silva and Ana de la Cerda y Mendoza - powerful personages of the court of Philip II - using archive documents and recent literature about aristocratic networks in early modern Europe. The focus of the paper is on the means used by Colonna and Gómez de Silva to maintain their relationship: the correspondence and the agents (secretaries and diplomats). The unique role of correspondance and agents is also examined through the fruitful intersection between archival sources and contemporary treatises.[...]
