Abstract

Introduction: Pain, and more specifically chronic pain, is a major public health issue. Among painful syndromes, fibromyalgia is at the heart of concerns and poses great difficulties, both in diagnosis and management. Even today, many patients are still prescribed treatments that provide little relief, raising the interest of non-medication management. Objective: The objective of this literature review is to review the current state of psychotherapeutic care traditionally used in the case of fibromyalgia, in order to identify the contributions and limitations of each of them in order to propose recommendations for care. Method: Five databases were used to search for articles, following PRISMA standards. The following psychotherapy articles, traditionally used in the management of fibromyalgia, have been selected: EMDR therapy, hypnosis, ACT therapy, TCC and Mindfulness. Results: Out of the 1560 articles identified, 9 studies were selected, based on our selection criteria. The majority of these studies reported effective interventions. Discussion: While the psychotherapies studied show effects on several of the symptoms of fibromyalgia, ACT therapy stands out widely: its efficacy has been demonstrated on 9 of the 12 symptoms studied in two randomized controlled trials. However, the question of effectiveness in psychotherapy still raises the question, which cannot be summed up by adding the dimensions in which it seems to have an effect. The plurality of interventions demonstrates an action on the symptomatic aspect of fibromyalgia, which is itself plural. Focusing an intervention on the presumed causes of fibromyalgia would appear to be a relevant object of study for future research.
