Abstract

The mechanical behaviour of ferrocement reinforced with different layers of a welded steel-wire square mesh is investigated in this research project Self-compacting mortar was used for the matrix. Ferrocement specimens were tested in 4-point bending in displacement-controlled conditions. The applied force and the maximum displacement were directly measured, while the deformations were investigated by means of Digital Image Correlation – DIC. The specimens were also modelled by means of nonlinear finite elements and comparisons were made with the test results. The cementitious matrix was modelled using the Concrete Damage Plasticity (CDP) model and the reinforcement using embedded elements. The nonlinear finite-element model is shown to reliably predict not only the peak load, but also the complex phenomena accompanying first cracking and post-peak softening.
