Abstract

Patrizia Lendinara, Professor Emeritus of Germanic Philology at the University of Palermo, is one of the world's leading scholars in the field of Anglo-Saxon and early Germanic language and literature. Her favoured research field is the study of glossography and lexicography, to which she gave a groundbreaking contribution. Her scholarly production on the subject has greatly furthered the understanding of many aspects of Anglo-Saxon glossography, not only by providing editions of a number of hitherto unpublished glossaries, but also by studying the taxonomy of glosses and investigating the connection between the lemma and its interpretamentum. Her research has fundamentally changed the way we perceive the study of glosses, by interpreting them as 'cultural markers' as well as relevant additional evidence for the circulation of works and books in early medieval Europe. The essays collected here are offered as a tribute to Patrizia Lendinara's scholarship by colleagues from the international academic community; they all focus on the various facets of glossography and lexicography of the medieval Germanic world and make a valuable and thought-provoking contribution not only to the study of glosses and lexicon, but also to the many neighbouring fields of research
