Abstract
This paper presents some cases of "iconographic migrations" along the Mediterranean routes in the modern age (XVI-XVIII centuries) with a privileged look at the southern Italy-Sardinia-Balearic-València route. Particular attention is paid to identifying the causes that have led to the spread of cults and Marian titles from one extreme to the other of the western Mediterranean and in particular to the reciprocal iconographic contaminations recorded in the various territories of the Crown of Aragon. Is also presented the case study of the iconography of the Virgin Hodegetria, which in its journey from east to west undergoes substantial formal changes and semantic shifts that significantly alter its appearance and, consequently, the devotional reception by the faithful communities.File | Size | Format | |
