The treatment of severe acetabular osteolysis by bone grafts and cementless techniques

Capone, A.;
1994-01-01

Abstract

The authors describe their experience in the treatment of severe acetabular osteolysis using bone grafts and cementless screwed acetabulum. They define the criteria that directed them towards this choice and the surgical method used in relation to bone loss caused by failure of the previous prosthesis. In light of their experience, the advantages and the drawbacks to using a cementless acetabulum in hip reimplantation are described, with particular analysis of the peculiar features of the P.M. acetabulum that, because it is screwed and has a truncated-conical design, permits stabilization of the grafts without the use of further instrumentation, and obtains effective primary stability even when there is discontinuity of the bottom or of the acetabulum.
