Abstract

The study presented is part of the research project Tradi onal building techniques: from knowledge to conserva on and performance improvement, carried out by the Restora on chair at the School of Architecture of Cagliari over the last decade. The purpose is studying the masonry techniques of historical defensive architectures in Sardinia for their knowledge, conserva on, and promo on. The absence of studies aimed at da ng both monumental and minor historical architectures in Sardinia led us to begin our research with the analysis of for ed medieval system in the south Sardinia (12th-15th cent.). This system was chosen because of its rather precarious condi on, which greatly facilitates the analysis of masonry structures, both in eleva on and in sec ons. Furthermore, defensive architectures are generally philologically dated and may therefore represent a benchmark for da ng other architectures, par cularly ‘minor’ structures, which are otherwise di cult to be placed chronologically. The research is based on a mul disciplinary approach that includes the representa on of historical architecture, the architectural history, the stra graphy of the masonries and analysis techniques. From a construc on point of view, the dimensions and materials used are also being inves gated, with par cular a en on to the mineralogical and petrographic characteris cs of the components. Following the collec on of data through archaeometric and other inves ga ons, management of the data plays a key role in the de ni on of chronological classes for similar construc on techniques.
