Abstract

Vallisnerian medicine in «La Galleria di Minerva». This paper is an overview on the medical topics contributions by Antonio Vallisneri, which were published on "La Galleria di Minerva" between 1696 and 1708. The texts Vallisneri proposed testifie the Paduan scientist’s commitment to promoting dissemination and information on the modern way to medicine. Among the contributions concerning medical topics, published on the erudite venetian journal by Antonio Vallisneri, there are both anonymous and signed reviews of published books concerning medical treatment, reports of discoveries made by both Vallisneri himself and others, his suggestions as well those of others with regard to medical practice, theoretical medical questions, surgical experience or that of others. In the opening lecture held in Padua in 1700 Studia Recentiorum non evertunt veterum Medicinam sed confirmant, Vallisneri presented modern medicine as "a new art" that developed and provided evidence for ancient medicine. It is this paper’s aim to detenct Vallisneri’s medical thinking in the years 1696 - 1708, characterized by the tension between supporting discoveries of modern medecine and using traditional healing methods.
