Abstract

Tthe aim of the present article is to connect two different areas such as Ottoman and Islamic studies, and put into a more general context of its time the Is-lamic debate about the acceptance of Western technology by translat-ing the first of a series of texts about the prohibition of a musical tool defined as a “talking box” (ṣundūq al-nātiq)
