Abstract

The extremely diverse nature of fortified heritage and the chronological scope of its stratifications make it particularly important and urgent to assemble a detailed and complex mosaic of knowledge that allows information to be managed both in qualitative and quantitative terms. The systematic and detailed knowledge of material evidence – whether the ruins of judicial castles, city walls and ramparts, barracks or bunkers – builds a field of knowledge that is gradually enriched thanks to in-depth study and that runs the risk of turning into a compartment-based system where data is difficult to extrapolateorlink. However,theessenceofanatlasliesexactlyinthesystematicgatheringofdetailedknowledge-based information, which is extracted from a large number of samples (not subject to particular pre-screening) and distributed over a wide geographic area; it is then reassembled according to sorted and overlapping thematic concepts. To make this possible a tool has been set up that is capable of recording information from studies and turning it into comparable data available for consultation in simple or aggregate form. Specific vocabularies introduced in the database allows to define univocally and objectively the different aspects considered, using numeric degrees instead of general description. The purpose-built information system is constantly updatable, multi-functional and interoperable. It allows the mapping of themes, whether homogeneous or derived from the interdisciplinary crossing of data.
