Abstract

The essay deals with Ariosto’s rewriting of the classical Homer’s and Virgil’s topos of the ekphrasis, with the aim of analyzing the vision, the general pattern and the specific position assigned by the “Furioso” to contemporary history. In particular the central value represented by the Italian Wars allows to establish a detailed composition between the Dantesque older political-historical model and the thought of the contemporaries Guicciardini and Machiavelli on crucial issues such as Fortune, State, Virtue of the Princes.
