Abstract

The essay aims to contribute to Mediterranean hospital history by highlighting the sources about mentally ill people’s reclusion in the ancient hospital in Cagliari, a place which has been used for about five hundred years and which has been the only caring facility in the city for a long time. Created in 1338 by appointment of Peter IV of Aragon, this hospital soon started receiving not only the poor and the foundlings, but also the mentally ill, and it was the only place dedicated to them for the whole modern era.
