Abstract
Can one talk of interspecific culture in pastoralism? This question may be a topic of interest today, thanks to the renewed attention that several disciplines, including anthropology, dedicate to man-animal relationships. The bringing back up to date of a classical theme in anthropology is probably fostered by the substitution of working animals with pets, even in rural settlements; it is like the incorporation, within common sense, of ecological principles and the urgency of ethical topics regarding nature. In this paper I have described some aspects of the relationships established between the goatherd and the animals in a wild and semi-wild goat breeding farm. The paper focusses on the complex dynamics linking the physical habitat (space, time and climate), the ‘animal nature’ (instinct, behaviour observed and volitions) and the work of man, in organisational, relational, emotional and aesthetic terms, as well as anthropopoietic. With the expression ‘goatfold habitat’, I have attempted to highlight the contemporary natural and cultural characteristic of the context in which men, the environment and animals relate to and influence one another, establishing forms of negotiation in meaning and communication. The use of sheep bells represents an efficient example of dialogue with nature. Although the theme opens many perspectives, this paper concentrates beautifully on the anthropological view, with the aim of interpreting the structural and defining process of man in a context in which the animal is the central focus.File | Size | Format | |
