Abstract
The essay is focused both on the actions, and the role of the Holy See between 1918 and 1938 in helping to preserve the future of the young Austrian First Republic. Through the use of Vatican archival sources (Vatican Secret Archive, and the Archive of the Department of Ecclesiastical Extraordinary Affairs of the Vatican Department of State) is examined the position of the Papacy toward the problem of postwar Austria, in its national and international (referring to Germany) relations. Although the study does not intend to provide a comprehensive history of Vatican diplomacy’s role in supporting the “Catholic cause” in postwar Europe, it tries to examine the role and efforts both of Vatican diplomacy, and Pius XI in determining Austrian fate in order to preserve it from multiples threats (such as Communism, atheism, freemasonry, National Socialism), and, in this way, to save Austrian democracy, its independence and the “Catholic cause” in the alpine country. These efforts lasted until the final breath of Austrian First Republic, sentenced of death by the Anschluss with the Third Reich.File | Size | Format | |
