Abstract

In the sixteenth century the city walls of Cagliari underwent major design interventions, wanted by the Spanish kingdom for the modernization of the outdated medieval defense system. After the sixteenth century, the urban defensive system remains virtually unchanged until the eighteenth century. The Savoy engineers extend the existing circuit with some works that offer a broad overview of architectural forms and characteristic functional solutions of the “deep fortification system” developed by Vauban. The new northern front of the fortress is designed by the military engineer Antonio Felice De Vincenti which solves the defensive system of the front with a solution called "horn work". In the early nineteenth century, the horn work was partially demolished to allow the opening of a new tree-lined avenue. The paper proposes a new reading of the urban landscape through historical maps and analysis of remaining structures.
