Abstract

The current China’s Africa policy begins in the aftermath of the international crisis experienced by the PRC after the Tiananmen square incident. The renewed interest of China for Africa, after the disengagement of the ‘80s, emerged clearly from the recovery of high-profile visits of Chinese leaders to the continent and was later confirmed by the release of an important policy paper which described the objectives of China’s policy toward Africa and the measures to achieve them. The Chinese presence in Africa today appears to be characterized by different interests at stake, that go far beyond the economic sphere, as well as by growing challenges which are forcing China to a delicate rethinking of some of the key pillars of its foreign policy, starting from the “non-interference” principle.
