Abstract

The tenth century saw an indigenous élite of military origin assume power in Sardinia. Their supremacy was legitimized by the honorific titles they were granted by the Emperor of Byzantium, but also by the fact that they commissioned the decoration of several churches with precious marbles and numerous Greek inscriptions. An analysis of the formal variants in which the name Torcotorio occurs in these inscriptions, and in later documents in Latin and in the Sardinian language, allows the reconstruction of the hierarchical relationships between Greek, Latin, and Sardinian, and indirectly, the cultural and political ideological orientation of this ruling class.
