Abstract

Williams’ major contribution to the present cultural and political debate is not simply that he taught how to think historically about cultural practices but he was the first intellectual capable of providing significant theoretical challenges for anyone interested in either the history of literary and cultural studies and the practice of critical thinking. The Social Text scrutinizes Williams’ extraordinary scope and reach of interest, stressing the importance of Gramsci’s theory in articulating a recognizable presence in many different fields of achievement, both as a political activist, scholarly and fictional writer.
