Abstract

The study begins with the awareness of the total absence, with reference to the Sardinian context, of studies aimed at dating historical architecture, both monumental and minor. The search started with the study of fortified systems, such as urban and suburban walls, castles, fortresses, bunkers, defense and lookout towers. These systems were chosen because they are usually in rather precarious conditions, greatly easing the analysis of masonry structures, both in elevation and in section. Furthermore, they are, in general, philologically dated, and therefore may represent a benchmark for dating other architectures, in particular, the so-called ‘minor’ ones, which are otherwise difficult to place in chronological terms. The research, still in progress, is based on a multidisciplinary approach that includes the representation of historic architecture, architectural history, the stratigraphy of the masonries, analysis techniques, from a construction point of view, size and material, paying particular attention to the mineralogical and petrographic characteristics of the components. A very important aspect is also related to data management, after its collection under archaeometric investigation and their intersection, to the definition of chronological classes for constructive homogeneous ranges.
