Der polyseme Zug der deutschen Sprache

Abstract

This chapter focuses on the lexeme Zug, which derives from the verb ziehen. After a brief look at its etymological and morphosemantic features, our study, supported by examples, proceeds by analysing the combined working of polysemy and motivation as well as the related phraseologisms which are characterized by various readings. The considerable range of meanings and the variety of uses of Zug show how linguistic economy, enabled by the use of a single word, may contribute to the enrichment of the lexicon.

Im Mittelpunkt der Behandlung steht das vom Verb ziehen abgeleitete Lexem Zug. Nach einem kurzen Blick auf die etymologischen und morphosemantischen Merkmale wird, anhand einiger Beispiele, einerseits auf das Zusammenwirken von Polysemie und Motiviertheit hingewiesen, andererseits auf die daraus entstehenden und mit vielerlei Lesarten versehenen Phraseologismen eingegangen. Das bemerkenswerte Bedeutungsspektrum dieses Lexems und die Vielfalt der Verwendungsweisen zeigen, wie die durch den Gebrauch eines einzelnen Wortes produzierte sprachliche Kürze bzw. Sprachökonomie zur Bereicherung des Wortschatzes beitragen kann.
