Dipartimento di Scienze chimiche e geologiche

Andrea Salis (AS) graduated in Chemistry in 1997 (110/110 cum laude) at the University of Cagliari (UniCA). From January 1998 to March 1999, he was Lieutenant in the Engineering Corp of the Italian Army, in the Technical Center for Chemistry, Physics and Biology in Civitavecchia (Rome). From 1999 he started a PhD in Chemistry at UniCA (Supervisors: Prof. V. Solinas and Prof. M. Monduzzi) during which he worked for 6 months as a visiting PhD student at Lund University (Sweden) under supervision of Prof. P. Adlercreutz. He has been a postdoc (2002-2006) and adjunct professor (2012-2013) in physical chemistry at UniCA and Research Fellow (2013-2014) at the Research School of Physics and Engineering (Australian National University) in Canberra (Australia) under supervision of Prof. B.W. Ninham.

Since 2015 AS is associate professor in Physical Chemistry at UniCA. He currently teaches “Physical Chemistry of Interfaces”, “Environmental Physical Chemistry” (MD in Chemical Sciences) and “Physical Chemistry” (BD in Pharmaceutical Biotechnologies). In 2017 (December) he was awarded with the Italian national qualification to full professorship (ASN – Abilitazione Scientifica Nazionale, I Fascia) in Physical Chemistry (03A2). AS is one of the 16 members of the board of the PhD School in Chemical Sciences and Technologies (Cagliari and Sassari Universities) where he teaches an advanced course on “Light Scattering techniques”. He has supervised or co-supervised more than 40 people among bachelors, masters, Erasmus+, and PhD students/Visiting PhD students, Post Docs/Research Fellows.

AS scientific interests concern the study of bio-nanointerfaces, particularly on the interactions of proteins/enzymes with nanostructures (mesoporous silica, metal organic frameworks) for different applications ranging from nanomedicine, biocatalysis pollutants removal from water. A great part of his studies were devoted to understanding the specific effect of strong and weak electrolytes (“Hofmeister” effects) in protein systems, enzyme catalysis, protein-nanomaterial interface, and bioelectrochemistry. His research involves the use of several characterizations techniques, that is: SAXS, XRD, TEM, SEM, N2-adsorption isotherms, FTIR, UV-Vis, TGA, DSC, Light Scattering (SLS, DLS, ELS), QCM, voltammetry (CV, DPV, SWV).

AS collaborates with research groups in Australia, Ireland, Sweden, Spain, Romania, Iran, and India. He has done more than 25 oral/invited presentations at national and international conferences or foreign universities (e.g. Universities of Sydney, Limerick, Babes-Bolyai, Australian National University, etc.). He was co-chair of the International Conference “Interfaces” hold in September 2021 in Santa Margherita di Pula (Italy) (https://convegni.unica.it/interfaces/) and vice-chair of the conference “FEBS: Biological Surfaces and Interfaces” to be held in June 2021 in Sant Feliu de Guixols (Spain).

AS has been member of the research unit of several funded national projects (PRIN: 2001, 2004, 2006, 2008, 2010-11) FdS 2016, FFABR 2017. Head of Research Unit of RAS 2018. Principal Investigator (PI) of two Industrial PhD projects in 2017 (PONRI 33rd PhD cycle) and 2018 (PONRI 34th PhD cycle). PI of FdS 2019, and PI of the Young Investigator Training Program 2019 (funded by ACRI).

AS is member of CSGI (Consorzio Interuniversitario Sistemi a Grande Interfase), President of the “Sezione Sardegna” of the SCI (Società Chimica Italiana). He has been member of  ACS (American Chemical Society), ECIS (European Colloid and Interface Society). He acts regularly as a reviewer for ACS, RSC, Wiley, and Elsevier Journals (https://publons.com/researcher/1336102/andrea-salis/peer-review/), for international (Slovakia, Chile, Poland, Switzerland) projects, and PhD thesis (Australia, India). AS is member of the Editorial Board of the Physical Chemistry Section (www.mdpi.com/journal/ijms/sectioneditors/PCCP) of the International Journal of Molecular Science (IF: 4.556; IJMS, publisher: MDPI). He has edited two special issues: https://www.mdpi.com/journal/ijms/special_issues/free_Immobilzed_enzymes and https://www.mdpi.com/journal/ijms/special_issues/ordered_mesoporous for IJMS. He is co-editor of a Special Issue to be published in Colloids and Surfaces B: Biointerfaces (Elsevier).
