Maurizio Murroni is Associate Professor of Telecommunications (ING-INF/03) at the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (DIEE) of the University of Cagliari. He received the Bachelor's degree in Electronic Engineering in 1998 and the Ph.D. in Electronic Engineering and Computer Science in 2001 from the University of Cagliari. He completed his Master's thesis at the School of Electronic Engineering, Information Technology and Mathematics, University of Surrey, Guildford, UK in 1998 and was a visiting PhD student at the Image Processing Group at the Polytechnic University, Brooklyn, New York, USA, in 2000. In 2006 and 2014 he was a short visiting scholar at the Department of Electronics and Computers of the Transylvanian University of Brasov, Romania, and in 2011 he was a visiting professor at the Department of Electronics and Telecommunications, Faculty of Engineering of Bilbao, University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU), Spain. In 2020 he was a visiting professor at the Research Centre/Wireless Multimedia and Networking Research Group, Kingston University, London, UK. From 2011 to 2020 he was the coordinator of the research unit of the Consorzio Nazionale Interuniversitario per le Telecomunicazioni (CNIT) at the University of Cagliari and from 2016 to 2020 he was the founder and president of the Italian Chapter of the Broadcast Technology Society (BTS) of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (IEEE). Since 2019 he has been a member of the AdCom of the IEEE BTS and of the Steering Committee of the IEEE International Symposium on Broadband Multimedia Systems and Broadcasting. Since 2023 he has been the coordinator of the Distinguished Lecture program of the IEEE BTS. Dr. Murroni is co-author of a large list of articles published in journals and in the proceedings of international conferences and has received numerous awards and recognitions. He has served as chair for various international conferences and workshops. He is an associate editor for the IEEE Transactions on Broadcasting. He co-authored 1900.6-2011 - IEEE Standard for Spectrum Sensing Interfaces and Data Structures for Dynamic Spectrum Access and other Advanced Radio Communication Systems. Prof. Murroni has served as project evaluator for several EU research programs and is the coordinator of the Horizon Europe project HEAT – Hybrid Extended reality, GA- 101135637 on the call HORIZON-CL4-2023-HUMAN-01-21 - Next Generation eXtended Reality. Since July 2024 he has coordinated the Master's Degree in Internet Technologies Engineering at the University of Cagliari. In January 2025 he was appointed VP of Conference for the IEEE BTS. His current research focuses on telecommunications issues, in particular on the transmission and processing of immersive multimedia data AR/VR/XR, on 5G/6G mobile radio systems, on signal processing for radio communications. Prof. Murroni is a member of the Association for Computer Machinery, senior member of IEEE, IEEE ComSoc, IEEE BTS, IEEE VTS, IEEE SP, AESS.
