BREVE PROFILO

Nicola Melis è specializzato in storia dell’Impero ottomano, con particolare riguardo per le aree mediterranee e africane. È in servizio come ricercatore (SSD-SPS/13) presso il Dipartimento di Scienze Sociali e delle Istituzioni dell’Università degli Studi di Cagliari. Si è laureato presso la Facoltà di Scienze Politiche dell’Università di Cagliari con una tesi sul tema del ?ih?d partendo dalle fonti giuridiche islamiche (Relatore: prof. Alberto Ventura). Ha conseguito il dottorato in “Storia e istituzioni dell’Asia e dell’Africa moderna e contemporanea” con una tesi di storia delle relazioni tra Ottomani e Portoghesi nel XVI secolo. Ha frequentato due master: Scienza dell’Organizzazione (Ailun, Nuoro) e “Informatica e direzione aziendale” (Cifra, Università di Cagliari). Ha insegnato lingua italiana presso l’Istituto Italiano di Cultura di Istanbul; lingua turca presso il Centro Linguistico d’Ateneo dell’Università di Cagliari. Attualmente insegna Storia e istituzioni dell’Africa mediterranea e del Vicino oriente. È socio dell’Istituto per l’Oriente “Carlo Alfonso Nallino”, Roma, SeSaMO (Società Italiana di Studi sul Medio Oriente); ASAI (Associazione per gli Studi Africani in Italia). IAMS 2012 (International Association Of Maritime Studies 2012), Isprom (Istituto di Studi e Programmi per il Mediterraneo)  È stato associato al Cnr-Isem (Istituto di Storia dell’Europa Mediterranea).  Ha partecipato a numerosi convegni e simposi internazionali per presentare il risultato delle proprie ricerche.

Brief Biographical note

Nicola Melis, a specialist in Near Eastern and Ottoman history, received his PhD from University of Cagliari (Italy) in 2000 with a thesis entitled “Ottoman Empire and Portugues Empire: a comparison between the political project and the military practice”. He received MA from the University of Cagliari in Islamic studies with a thesis about the concept of jih?d, a MA in Behavioral Science, the the Free University of Nuoro (Italy), 1997, and a MA in Computer science and Company management, University of Cagliari, 2001. He studied Arabic at the Universities of Tunis and Cairo; Turkish and Ottoman language and paleography at the University of Istanbul, 1998-99. He has taught at the Faculty of Political Science of the University of Cagliari, where since the 1st of May 2006 he is a Researcher in the History Department. He is a member of the editorial advisory boards of some journals  and academic series. He is a member of the Institute for the Orient “Carlo Alfonso Nallino”, Roma, SeSaMO (Italian Society for the Study about the Middle East); ASAI (Association for African Studies in Italy), IAMS 2012 (International Association Of Maritime Studies 2012), Isprom (Instituteo about Studies and Programs for the Mediterranean). He is a founder member of the International Association of Maritime Studies 2012 (IAMS2012) and a former associated member of  the Institute of Mediterranean Europe History (ISEM), as part of the National Research Council (CNR). In. Dr. Melis’ current research deals with the minorities in Northern Africa, Near East and Anatolia, past to present; he also studied the topics of the concept of jih?d in the Islamic jurisprudence in the Ottoman age and of the Ottoman and Portuguese imperial expansions in the Indian Ocean during the early modern period, based on extensive archival field work in Turkey, Italy and Portugal. He has shared his ongoing work at numerous international conferences, and has authored several recent articles on the subjects. At present, Dr. Melis is working on a monograph about Ottoman africa.
