Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering

Gianluca Gatto graduated in Electrical Engineering in November 1994 at the University of Cagliari.  From October 1997 is at the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the University of Cagliari where he is an Associate Professor of Converters, Electrical Machines and Drives since October 2014. He cooperates with researchers of the Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials and Engineering of the Territory of the University of Cagliari and the Department of Security Engineering - Tomas Bata University in Zlin - Faculty of Applied Informatics. He is a member of the IEEE Society with an affiliation with the Industrial Electronic Society, the Electromagnetic Compatibility Society and the Power Electronic Society.

Research Activities

Gianluca Gatto has done academic research on power electronic converters, electric drives, electromagnetic compatibility in industrial and hospital environments and the  planning in the use of renewable energy resources for the smart buildings.
In 2003, he has started a research activity in the Laboratory of Electromagnetic Compatibility at the University of Cagliari. In particular, it has concerned the EMC certification of electro-hydraulic actuators used in oil refineries and the evaluation of the electromagnetic noise emission of power electronic converters employed in wind and solar power plants.
In recent years, his research activity is focused on the real time implementation of predictive control algorithms by means of Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA) for permanent magnet synchronous machines, synchronous reluctance motors and DC/DC power electronic converters. It is currently doing research on the electromagnetic compatibility of radio frequency identification devices placed in industrial and hospital environments.
