Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering

Giorgio Giacinto is a Full Professor of Computer Engineering at the University of Cagliari, Italy, and a Guest Professor at Luleå University of Technology, Sweden. In 1995, he joined the Pattern Recognition and Applications Lab at the Dept. of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, University of Cagliari, Italy; in 2000, he was appointed a permanent faculty position as an Assistant Professor from 2000 to 2004 and Associate Professor from 2005 to 2017. He got a Ph.D. in information engineering in 1999 from the University of Salerno, Italy.

Prof. Giacinto is the coordinator of the MSc course in Computer Engineering, Cybersecurity and Artificial Intelligence, and teaches courses on Databases, Operating Systems, and Computer Security in the BSc course in Electrical, Electronic and Computer Engineering,  and in the MSc courses in Computer Engineering, Cybersecurity and Artificial Intelligence, Electronic Engineering and Internet Engineering at the University of Cagliari, Italy. He acts as the coordinator for international student mobility for the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering and for the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture.

He has been a member of the PhD program in Electronic and Computer Engineering at the University of Cagliari since 2001.

Prof. Giacinto has been a senior member of the IEEE and the ACM since 2010 and received the Fellow Award from IAPR in 2021.

His main area of expertise is in machine learning approaches to malware analysis and detection. He is the scientific coordinator of the Spoke 3 within the SERICS project. He is also the coordinator or principal investigator of research and internationalization projects. 

Prof. Giacinto is the author of more than 180 papers in international journals, conference proceedings, and book chapters. His research activities are funded by regional, national, and international projects.

He is the director of the local branch of the Cybersecurity National Lab and a member of the national managing board. He is also a member of the managing board of the National Artificial Intelligence and Intelligent Systems Lab.

On behalf of the CINI consortium (National Interuniversity Consortium for Informatics), he participates in the activities of the European Cybersecurity Organisation (ECSO).

He is the Editor in Chief of the "Security Engineering & Applications" section of the Journal of Cybersecurity and Privacy. He is a program committee member of conferences in the field of cybrsecurity and regularly acts as a reviewer. He is the general chair of the international conference DIMVA 2022.

He is one of the six founders of the company Pluribus One, a spin-off of the University of Cagliari.
