Giorgio Fumera received the MSc degree in Electronic Engineering, with honors, in 1997, and the PhD degree in Computer Engineering, in 2002, from the University of Cagliari, Italy. From 2002 to 2011 he was Assistant Professor at the same University. Since 2011 he is Associate Professor on Computer Engineering. In February 2022 he received the national scientific habilitation for full professorship. He teaches courses on Fundamentals of Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, and Cybersecurity Technology and Risk Management for several BSc and MSc programs of the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture. Since 2006 he is a member of the board of the PhD Program in Electronic and Computer Engineering of the University of Cagliari.

G. Fumera is a member of the Pattern Recognition and Applications Lab at the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering. His research interests are related to theoretical and methodological issues of statistical pattern recognition, including the reliability of classification systems, multiple classifier systems, and adversarial machine learning, with applications to text and image categorisation, and to computer vision for intelligent videosurveillance. On these topics he published more than one hundred papers on international journals and conference proceedings. He participated in several research projects funded by public agencies (including the EU FP7 and H2020 programmes) and by private companies. Recently he has been principal investigator of a project funded by the Regional Administration of Sardinia (POR-FESR 2014-2020), related to medical image analysis for supporting diagnosis tasks, and of a project funded by the European Space Agency, related to image analysis techniques for intelligent video surveillance systems for law enforcement.

Main bibliometric indices:
– total number of citations, excluding self-citations: more than 3,600 (source Scopus);
– h-index: 33 (source: Scopus).

G. Fumera is associate editor of the international journals Pattern Recognition, Pattern Analysis and Applications and Intelligenza Artificiale (official journal of the Italian Association for Artificial Intelligence, AIxIA). He regularly acts as a reviewer for the main international journals and conferences in the pattern recognition and related fields.

He has been thesis supervisor of more than 40 undergraduate and graduate students in Electronic Engineering; supervisor or co-supervisor of eight doctoral students of the Ph.D. program in Electronic and Computer Engineering at the University of Cagliari, and co-supervisor of a Ph.D. student at the École de Technologie Supérieure (ETS) of Montréal (Canada).

In June 2016 he has been visiting professor at the École de Technologie Supérieure (ETS) of Montréal (Canada).

In 2017 he has been co-chair of the 7th Int. Conf. on Image Processing Theory, Tools and Applications (IPTA 2017), Nov. 28th – Dec. 1st, Montreal, Canada.

G. Fumera is a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the International Association of Pattern Recognition (IAPR), and the Italian Association for Artificial Intelligence (AIxIA).
