Mario Petrollese is an assistant professor of Systems for Energy and the Environment at the University of Cagliari since 2018.

After the master’s degree in mechanical engineering in 2011 (Magna cum laude), he worked as project engineer in the field of renewable energy systems. PhD candidate on Industrial Engineering at the University of Cagliari from 2012 to 2015. After the doctoral degree, he worked as postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Mechanical, Chemical and Material Engineering of University of Cagliari from 2015 to 2018 in the project “Modeling, simulation, and optimization of complex energy systems and micro-grids powered by renewable energy sources and integrated with energy storage systems”. Visiting scholar at the Department of Energy Technology, Aalborg University (DK) in 2013, at Department of Energy Technology, University of Seville (SP) in 2014 and at the Thermodynamics, Liège Université (BE) in 2019.

Author of more than 50 publications in the field energy systems, his main research activities concern:

  • Modeling, simulation and optimization of Concentrated Solar Power systems and development of innovative control strategies for optimal management of these solar-based plants.
  • Development and implementation of innovative strategies for the energy management of renewable energy based microgrids including energy storage systems.
  • Modeling, simulation and optimization of Organic Rankine Cycle power systems under design and off-design operating conditions.
  • Development of A-CAES hybrid energy storage systems for ancillary services devoted to power system
  • Development of Carnot Battery energy storage systems
