COURSE DESCRIPTION: English for Medicine is a practice-oriented course designed to strengthen participants’ written and spoken English skills in clinical and healthcare contexts. The course focuses on the language and communication strategies needed to interact clearly, professionally, and empathetically with patients and colleagues. Participants will develop the skills required to take a patient’s medical history, discuss symptoms and possible diagnoses, explain treatments and prescriptions, provide health-related recommendations, and manage follow-up consultations. Through role-plays, simulations, authentic dialogues, listening activities, and guided written tasks, participants will practise communication in realistic healthcare situations. Particular attention will be given to medical terminology, doctor–patient interaction, intercultural communication, and the use of appropriate language in sensitive situations, including delivering difficult information and responding to patients’ concerns. The programme covers professional introductions and general clinical communication, patient history-taking, symptoms and diagnosis, prescriptions and recommendations, and sensitive communication and follow-up. Participants who attend at least 80% of the course and successfully complete the continuous assessment activities will receive a certificate of attendance and an Open Badge.
