Introduction to Open Science for PhD students Course

The University of Cagliari, within the EDUC offer, is promoting the course “Introduction to Open Science for PhD Students”, aimed at doctoral candidates interested in deepening their understanding of scientific communication, copyright, Open Access/Open Science, and research evaluation.

Target participants

The course, organized by the University Library System and included in the University’s policies for the implementation of the HRS4R strategy, is addressed to PhD students and aims to provide knowledge and skills useful for:

  • understanding the principles of scientific communication;
  • becoming familiar with the essential aspects of copyright in the academic context;
  • exploring the topics of Open Access and Open Science;
  • acquiring skills for carrying out effective bibliographic research;
  • using scientific information responsibly;
  • disseminating research results in an open form;
  • understanding how research evaluation systems work.

During the course, the main tools for bibliographic research will be presented, with differentiated modules depending on the disciplinary area. Useful elements for the open management of research data will also be introduced.

At the end of the course, participants will have a better understanding of electronic research infrastructures, of the tools and services available for publishing research results, including open access, and of the ways in which scientific productivity is evaluated.

Course structure

The course will be delivered entirely online and will use Moodle as the main platform, with Teams for the live sessions. The programme involves a total workload of 12 hours, in addition to some reference meetings to be held in person. Activities are scheduled for 5, 12, 19 and 26 May 2026 (9:00-12:00 a.m.), while further meetings with the libraries are planned during June.

The language of instruction will be Italian; however, the teaching slides will be in English. In addition, the lessons will be recorded and made available on Moodle, so that participants may review the contents afterwards. The recordings will be in Italian, but they will later be provided with English subtitles.

Assessment and certificate

In order to obtain the certificate of attendance and completion, participants will need to:

  • attend at least 80% of the course hours;
  • complete all the required activities;
  • achieve a score equal to or higher than 70% in the final test.

Attendance will be verified through the Teams report.
